Addressing Effects of Climate change Using Biotechnology

GE Mosquitoes
Andrew Hammond, a genetic engineer at Imperial College London, and his team have been genetically engineering mosquitoes, to prevent them from reproducing. They use a special technique called "gene drive", which allows an offspring to inherit the new trait with close the 100% efficiency. This new process quickly transforms a population to have the new, desirable trait. By using this technology, scientists can specifically sterilize the females carrying the disease, without affecting any others.

They use the CRISPR-cas9 technology to quickly alter the DNA.

"If we can sterilize the females...we can actually eliminate a whole mosquito population without affecting those mosquitoes that don't have the capability to transmit malaria." I.22
