The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon that causes Earth's atmosphere to trap heat radiating from space. This is caused by gases present in the atmosphere that keep heat from leaving Earth, called greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases include CO2, CH4, N2O, and water vapor. G.2

Humans have contributed to and worsened the greenhouse effect. when fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, are used and burned, carbon is produced and combines with oxygen present in the air to make CO2, a greenhouse gas. This increases the amount of greenhouse gases and increases the radiation, causing the climate to warm. G.2
